cats will be cats [May. 30th, 2012|12:44 am]

boxofdelights
The house was cold when I got home last night. Eventually I noticed that the back door was open. I thought Nixie must have left it open to air things out, and then forgotten; I had noticed that the house smelled worse than usual.

After going to bed I noticed that my eyes were itchy. Am I allergic to dogs now? I wondered. Aiko spent the weekend at my husband's house, but he left plenty of hair here. Eventually I realized that what I was smelling was feral cat. It was so very feral cat that I had to get up and search the house. I didn't find one, but I think one of them must have been inside.

My neighbor feeds them, but they spend more time at my house. My garden has more safe spaces. And birds. And mice. And my foundation has flow-through ventilation, so it's cozier on the outside.

My neighbor and I agree that cats shouldn't live outside. We agree that we don't want them to suffer. She was really pleased when I got them trapped, neutered and returned, and the kittens to people who would tame them and put them up for adoption; pleased enough that she seems to forgive all my other neighborly flaws. That's important. But... I admit, if it were up to me... I'd have them euthanized.

Calling all Incrementalists! [May. 29th, 2012|11:31 pm]

skzbrust

What, I hear you ask, is an “Incrementalist” in this context?

An Incrementalist is someone who has lived an indefinite time; one of them has been around for over two thousand years.  Some have only been around for a single lifetime.  Most are somewhere in between.

An Incrementalist is someone who has access to memories going back 30,000 years.

An Incrementalist is someone skilled at manipulating others through suggestion, and stimulating the production of neuro-chemicals within another’s brain.

An Incrementalist is someone dedicated to making the world a little better.

The project is a setting for either science fiction, or secret history; especially secret history.  Any time you can think of an historical event that might have been a little worse, or might not have been as good as it actually was, an Incrementalist might have been involved.  Personally, I’m of the opinion that the Incrementalists had something to do with the passing of the Gay marriage act in New York, and the recent investigation of Rupurt Murdoch.  I could be wrong.

It is also the setting for Spiked; a novel I’ve written with Skyler White, that will be out from Tor in the summer of 2013.

Politically, Incrementalists cover the entire spectrum from the Left to the Far Left.

There are, in total, around 200.  The five oldest enduring personalities make up Salt; an informal group that guides the discussions (well, arguments) but has no actual power.

If you want to play, you need to go to The Salt Board and register; then read through the introductory material.  That will tell you how to start playing.  You can also ask questions there, once you’re registered.  If you have problems with registration, feel free to ask here.

Kindle post. 3 states today! Our longest day, 407 miles. We're in Nauvoo State Park Illinois. Rocky ground covered in pine needles. Decent toilets a couple of blocks away but water & a sheltered picnic area closer. Quiet. It's sunny & warm today.

Now that everyone's back from the long weekend, a reminder that I have a print sale running through the end of May.

I just added a new image to it, something a little different:

Haiku Earring Party thanks [May. 29th, 2012|11:28 am]

Thank you to everybody who came to the Haiku Earring Party and made it so much fun. Especially thanks to the intrepid set-up gang and clean-up gang. I am trying to remember all the people who helped, because it was a blur of helpfulness -- I know my sister was there, and [info]roadnotes and Barb whose LJ handle I forget, darn it, and I believe [info]redbird helped, and there were at least four other people who I am spacing out right now, but it was awesome. (Please leave a post here and tell me if you were one of them, you guys, ok? My forgettery is due to tiredness and spaciness, not due to lack of appreciation.) Speaking of appreciation, I'm grateful that [info]polyfrog made us some wonderful ice cream, and I hope many of you got a chance to taste it. Also, big thanks to everybody who joined in on the musical interlude that ended the party.

So, did you write a haiku and get earrings this year?

home from WisCon, but sans net [May. 29th, 2012|11:23 am]

I'm over at the May Day Cafe, because the upgrade at our house didn't go so well, and the valiant Juan will be thumping on it a bit tonight to see if he can get it working. Until then, email and everything else will probably have to wait, although I do have some email access on my phone. (It's limited by my ability to look at tiny-screen email and by the extreme tiredness of post-convention life, though. Tired! So tired! But very happy.)

I'll try to write up a convention report and post it when the net's back at our house. Until then, it was so great to see everybody, and thank you all for so much fun.
